From my first visit to Cafe Heckenmoos in 1962 to all the subsequent visits, Kitzbuehel has never disappointed.
Probably the best time is near the beginning of January when the famous Hahnenkamm race is held; the streets are alive with racegoers and you can rub shoulders at the bar with all the famous names. The snow is best then and it's not too cold as the skifields are not up on glaciers or barren mountains. When the sun comes out, skiing down the Kitzhulerhorn is one of the most pleasant ski runs in the world - south facing with lots of stop off points en route!
The night life is second to none with every kind of restaurant and bar - my favourite was the one where an old Philippino singer sand the blues (and many other songs) and sometimes when you weren't looking it sounded like the real thing - he was that good at copying the original artist!
Best of all was our stay with friends who had a lovely wooden chalet on the lower slopes of the town, but even the guest houses and private rooms were so nice and olde worldly yet with all modern conveniences and all well heated. The town swimming pool was a regular haunt of ours after skiing.
Truly atop class ski resort with something for everyone is Kitzbuhel
