Corbyn Head Hotel

Although we were tempted to stay at the Grand Hotel, we actually stayed at the Corbyn Head Hotel, attracted by the RAC's fine dining award.

However, we, and we were not alone in this matter, found the food to be very poor indeed and the toilet seat remained broken throughout our stay. We consider the cost of £712 for four nights to have been outrageous.

We have stayed in numerous hotels both in the UK and abroad; this is the first time that, upon departure, we were neither thanked for our custom, nor asked if we needed help with our bags.

It is important, if wishing to get the best out of Torquay, to choose your hotel with care. We wished we'd stayed at the Grand given our appalling experience at the Corbyn Head.

Many years ago, my sister and her husband moved to a Devon village, Colyton, near Seaton, East Devon. Since then, we have had holidays in Paradise every year.
The coastline, Seaton, Beer, Branscombe, Sidmouth is unspoilt by commercialism with countryside down to the sea.

At Branscombe as well as the delightful thatched cottages with their picture postcard gardens, there is a Tea Shanty right on the beach.

The sea is cobalt blue and the pebbly beaches always clean. Each little bay is hidden by red cliffs at Seaton and white cliffs at Beer which are a real sun-trap. There are walks over the cliffs linking each bay.

Beer is an old smuggling village with caves to explore and a stream which is channelled through the main street. The high hedgerows are covered with honeysuckle and the air is soft and balmy.

There are first class hotels and well situated caravan sites on the cliff heads and various kinds of accommodation including the Lyme Bay Holiday Village in Seaton. There is an electric tram runway through the countryside by the River Axe.

Sidmouth is a dignified shopping area and boasts the beautiful Connaught Gardens where a Musical Festival is held every August, where the Esplanade is line with street artists.

I'm torn between making the area's attraction more widely known and yet maintaining its unspoilt charm. I recommend it to those people who appreciate the unhurried pace of one of the loveliest places on earth.
