Copenhagen |

Two hours after take-off from Birmingham airport, we arrived in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, and 30-minutes later we had checked in at our hotel thanks to the city's ultra-efficient public transport network.
Our hotel was a few steps from Nyhavn, the city's bustling focal point, set on a beautiful canal-side location. The canal is lined with bars and restaurants, painted in picturesque pastel colours. But beware - a pint of the local Carlsberg will set you back 45 kroner (£4.50).
We took a canal cruise from Nyhavn to see the best of Copenhagen from the water. The city's most famous landmark is the statue of The Little Mermaid, based on a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, Copenhagen's most famous son. The statue is visible from the canal boat, but only just - we were surprised how small it really is.
Another of the city's must-see attractions is Amalienborg Palace - Denmark's answer to Buckingham Palace. Soldiers are constantly on guard in bearskin hats, standing in front of their guard-huts, and when the queen is in residence they perform the changing of the guard, which is quite a spectacle.
A bridge linking Copenhagen to the Swedish city of Malmo opened recently, making it easy to visit for a day-trip. However, doing this was the only regret we had, as it meant we had less time to spend in wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen.

Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen |

Wonderful Copenhagen! I can recommend Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens to anyone wanting to capture some Christmas atmosphere without spending a fortune.
Tivoli opens for the Christmas holidays in early December, its full of fun things to do & see for all ages, there are numerous funfare rides & stalls, a fantastic Christmas Market selling all sorts of food, drink and trinkets, there's even an outdoor ice rink.
At dusk the whole place is covered in fairy lights. It's best to arrive early, prepared to stay for the day as it does get busy at weekends. Both my children (aged 9 and 6) had a fantastic time and want to go again next year.
The short flight time (90 mins) & excellent rail service from the airport terminal into the city, make it very easy and relaxing if travelling with kids. Copenhagen is safe, clean and not too expensive. The local people were extremely helpful and friendly and (putting us to shame!)EVERYBODY seemed to speak English.
We stayed at the excellent Hotel Mercure Copenhagen - 5 mins walk from Tivoli a sound base for exploring the city, rooms were v.good and the breakfasts were amazing! We will definitely go back.

We went to Copenhagen in the winter, and really, Tivoli made our holiday! They have fairy lights absolutely everywhere, and the smell of the glug and the hot chocolate is just overwhelming.
It is just a little fairytale paradise in the centre of town, and compared to other prices in Copenhagen (which were absolutely horrendously outrageous) this was actually quite affordable!
