Athens to me is a bustling modern city with overcrowded streets, traffic jams and pollution and is not what I expected to see as the Capital city of Greece. At first glance, I did not see the splendour of Ancient Athens, but its historic civilisation did finally come alive with my first glimpse of the Acropolis. I travelled to Athens by coach from the port of Piraeus, some 7 miles from Athens. Piraeus is a very busy port for Athens and many cruise ships come here. Piraeus was equally unimpressive! However, once at the Acropolis, I stepped into one of the great wonders of the world and was particularly impressed with sights dating from 5th Century B.C. I hadn't realised that the Acropolis consisted of 4 ancient buildings; the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, The Erechtheion and the Propylaea. It was a challenging walk of approximately 2 miles over steep inclines, with approximately 200 - 300 steps over uneven surfaces to climb, to reach the Acropolis and the Parthenon at the top, from where the coach parked, but it was well worth the effort to walk this archaeological site and I was so glad to see it all, despite the ongoing restoration work being carried out!! I left the Acropolis with memories which will last forever. It was an amazing place!
