I was in Vietnam last summer. There was everywhere I went only Vietnamese tourist. We went to Halong bay with a 2 days trip, sleeping on boat, Sapa and Cao Son, Tam Coc and Perfume pagoda.
Among the attractions, I prefer Halong Bay, Sapa and Cao Son. All are cool, beautiful and enjoyable ; the landscape, the people, especially hill tribes in Cao Son and Cao Son Ecolodge staff.
I would like to suggest all of you to use the service of Hanspan or Buffalo as they do them well and responsibly

| Although this hotel claims to be a four star and is described as 'glitzy' in travel books, it could only be described as such if you compare it to staying in a hostel with no electricity or running water. The rooms are cheaply furnished and although we had a beautiful view of Halong Bay, the windows were the cheapest quality. There was no attempt to decorate the rooms in any kind of style which you would expect from a four star anywhere else. The public spaces were ok, but don't let them fool you. I didn't use the pool but one member of our party had a look at it and didn't recommend it - it had definitely seen better days.

This hotel is simply great value for money. The Indochine Hotel is located at 42 Hai Ba Trung Street in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh - a block on the main 'strip' of Dong Khoi but without all the traffic noise.
The hotel was recently completely renovated and notwithstanding the site is a narrow one, the clever use of glass throughout the hotel, including the rooms, makes the property light and airy.
Breakfast is included in the room price (USD$25/night for first three nights, longer stays are cheaper) and are eaten in the ground floor restaurant - off the lobby - where a la carte luncheon and dinner meals can be ordered. Wine is available.
Complimentary taxi ride to OR from is available. They have Business Centre with InterNet, direct dial telephones in all rooms and accept major credit cards.
Highly recommended.
(About the writer: travels on business constantly - over 300 nights away from home in 2003 - and is somewhat of an expert in checking hotels and restaurants.)
