I visited Honk Kong not long after the change of ownership and it did seem a bit of a city in confusion. Prices of items were very irratic from shop to shop and there seems to be a very annoying haggling culture in Hong kong (shopkeepers will well over price there goods and when enquiring are expecting to be knocked down).
As a western looking person, I found the whole shopping scene (or even just walking through shopping areas, very annoying). It was though there was a stigma that westerners have money and shop keepers/sales people would target you and walk out of their shops straight to you to invite you in (if you are western looking).
There was one such pleasant gem of a place which was on Lantau Island (one of HK's smaller islands). This island is host to the World's largest Bronze budda on top of a huge hill surrounded in vegetation. It was an incredible sight and one worth a visit.

Super Hotel, make sure you upgrade to a Deluxe room, and get access to the E - Club - complimentary breakfast, free alcoholic drinks and food 6pm to 8pm.
Worth every penny.
Rooftop swimming pool excellent.
Staff could not have been more friendly / helpful.
Ideally situated for Temple Street Night Market. Only 300 yds from Jordan underground station.
Try Majestic Tailors if you want clothes made. Excellent service from Larry, lovely chap, only 100 yards from hotel.
Enjoy.

We stayed at the Albert Court hotel in December. The staff are extremely friendly at this hotel and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are a nice size and have good decor. The only down side to this hotel is there is no swimming pool, but if your only in singapore for a few days this does not matter. This hotel is located in an area called Little India, and when you walk around this area you forget you are actually in Singapore. There are some great Asian restaurants around this area.
This hotel is not far from the MRT station, which is very efficient and cheap. The restaurants down by boat quay, are amazing, there is lots of choice and there are some nice bars around here to. If you want to go to the beach for the day, head over to Sentosa Island, and catch the cable car over, this costs around £8.00 return, and is well worth it, although you can see lots of big ships and tankers out at sea, it makes a nice change. There are three man made beaches and small man made islands and a choice of bars and restaurants.
