Overview Things to do Suitability Country Info (Greece)
The beautiful island of Zante, also known as Zakinthos, is one of the largest Ionian islands with green slopes, olive groves, craggy coasts and glorious white beaches. The island is rich in history dating back to 1500 BC, from the Achaeans through to Roman times and more recently the Venetians. Once described by the Venetians as the 'Flower of the East' this charming island has all the ingredients for a great holiday. There are many things to see in Zante such as The Solomos mausoleum which is also a museum dedicated to the island's aristocracy of bygone days, while the Byzantine Museum sports splendid icons and frescoes salvaged from the island's beautiful medieval churches, destroyed in the massive earthquake of 1953. The main attraction for visitors, however, is the triangular shaped island's 57 miles (92km) of coastline, particularly on the eastern and southern flanks, which are blessed with beautiful bays.
