Armagh is located in the geographical heartland of Northern Ireland, a beautiful rural, historic area served by the main motorway network in Northern Ireland, with major road links to the business capitals of Belfast and Dublin.
Connection times with world markets are especially important: Belfast International Airport - 45 minutes away from the City; Dublin Airport - 70 minutes; Port of Larne - 75 minutes; Port of Belfast -50 minutes. This central location makes Armagh a communications hub with excellent links to the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States of America. Continuous monitoring and development of road links are key factors in the approach adopted by the Armagh Economic Development Group, so that as demand increases, plans are already in place to increase capacity to cope. At present Armagh is able to offer surprisingly short delivery times to the international marketplace, and the District Council is committed to maintaining these in the future. Armagh, like Down and Monaghan which adjoin it, is a county of gentle hills - the land becoming more hilly towards the south, where Slieve Gullion rises to 1,893 feet. Around Richill and Loughanll in the north is a rich fruit growing area, which has earned for Armagh the title of "The Garden of Ulster", it is noted for Bramley apples, garden plants and jam. Lurgan and Portadown are important centres of the linen industry. This area was the scene of many events in the epic literature ancient Ireland. In history it also holds an important place, and the ancient city of Armagh - in prehistoric times the seat of Ulster kings - has been Ireland's ecclesiastical capital for 1,5000 years. |
