Mauritania is a country in NW Africa where the Sahara and its sands have dominated the shaping of the county's culture and infrastructure. Yes, there are similar lanscapes in W and N Africa, but few are on the same scale and as varied as those in Mauritania.

Here you can find an incredible transition from wild coast to sand dunes and desert without a resort in sight. If it’s tranquillity you’re after, the Mauritanian coastline is completely virginal (unlike neighbouring Senegal) and the situation is likely to remain that way with the immense stretch of seashore protected, with Parc National du Banc d’Arguin ranking as one of the best bird-watching spots in the world.

Nouadhibou, a fishing port on the Atlantic Coast, is also a good gateway to this region.

For the outdoor-adventure types, Mauritania offers a wealth of trekking options as well as camel trips through surreal landscapes. There is also hot-air ballooning in 'The Adrar'.

Aside from eco attraction to Mauritania, the country is also of strong historical interest, with a few World Heritage listed sites, caravan towns, all testifying to ancient civilisations. Culturally, Mauritania is pretty much unique. The population is equally divided between Moors of Arab descent and black Africans. It’s effectively a Muslim country with a black African twist. This striking combination is part of its appeal and intrigue.
