Mali Travel Guide

Mali is a landlocked country in W Africa. Mali borders Algeria on the N, Niger on the E, Burkina Faso and the Côte d'Ivoire on the S, Guinea on the SW, and Senegal and Mauritania on the W.

Mali is at the centre of a region that once supported Africa’s greatest empires and is rich with historical significance. Notable attractions from Mali's inheritance of history include the legendary city of Timbuktu, the incredible mosque at Djenne and the bustling river port of Mopti to name just a few.

Mali's economy in historical times and present day were/are centred around the River Niger and its trade routes. Experiencing the river on a slow boat to Timbuktu gives a real sense of the county's culture and shows of the 'way of life' of its people. Not far from the riverbanks, the extraordinary Bandiagara Escarpment (listed a World Heritage Site) rises up from the plains, and shelters one of W Africa’s most intriguing communities (the Dogon), whose villages and cultural rituals still cling to the edge of the rocky cliffs.

Whilst a trip to Mali has much to offer, take notice of government travel warnings to the area (especially Northern Mali) as the situation maybe a unsafe.
