Libya, located in N Africa is the bridge where the Sahara meets the Mediterranean. Home to Africa’s most incredible and accessible desert scenery, the Sahara engulfs over 90% of this country. A traveller can visit the enchanting oasis towns of Ghadames and Ghat, marvel at palm-fringed lakes surrounded by sand dunes, take a visit to any number of extinct volcanoes and experience Jebel Acacus (one of the world’s finest open-air galleries of prehistoric rock art).
As the country is so vast with little but desert surounding everything, travel here is best served up as part of tour groups (even as little as 1 or 2 people plus guide, is possible). On a tour you’ll be able to cover so much more territory than you otherwise could and most tour companies give you the flexibility to design your own itineraries. Whilst Libya is relatively safe compared to neighbouring countries, it is advisable to check latest travel alerts before embarking on a trip to Libya. Border areas with Sudan, Chad, Niger and Algeria are potentially dangerous. |
