Liberia Travel Guide

Liberia is a country on the W coast of Africa bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea and the Ivory Coast.

For the tourist, Liberia is pretty much off limits and anyone wanting a trip this nation would be strongly advised to seak Government travel warnings. Independent travel outside of the country's capital Monrovia is far from being safe.

It all went wrong for Liberia after a military-led coup in 1980 overthrew the then-president William R. Tolbert, which marked the beginning of a period of instability that eventually led to two civil wars that left hundreds of thousands of people dead and devastated the country's economy. Today, Liberia is recovering from the lingering effects of the civil war and related economic devastation. Statistics indicate that about 85% of the population live on less than $1.25 a day.

When Liberia's doors do open to tourists, the treasures will be centred around dense, humid rainforests which are occupied by forest elephants, pygmy hippos etc. The coastal areas will also be popular with white-sand beaches and pristine turquoise waters. However, the present situation in Liberia will hide these treasures from this generation of traveller.
