Once upon a time, Algeria was a popular tourist destination alongside neighbouring Morocco. Whilst Morocco retained it's appeal, Algeria's tourist industry all but vanished when civil war broke out in 1992. After more than a decade of conflict, the situation improved slightly, and limited access to the S Sahara region has been possible in the last few years. However, independent travel without a vehicle is almost nonexistent, and after the tourist abductions of 2003, self-driving tourists need to be very aware and informed of the risks of travelling to this country.

Algeria's lack of modern day appeal as a tourist destination is a real shame. It is one of the most fascinating countries in North Africa. The Unesco-listed Tassili N'Ajjer and Hoggar regions, near the town of Tamanrasseton is a great place to witness Algerian culture. The capital Algiers contains a vivid mix of tradition and modernism, its colonial past has been carefully preserved and acts as a reminder of the significance of this nation.
