Guyana Travel Guide

Guyana is a country in NE South America. It has an Atlantic Ocean coastline in the NE, and lies between Suriname to the E and Venezuela to the W, with Brazil to the S. It is now the third-smallest country in South America after Suriname and Uruguay.

Described by its own tourism board as ‘Conradian’ and ‘raw,’ Guyana is a densely forested country with a bad reputation of political unrest and instability with interethnic tension. While politics aren’t improving this country's appeal as a travel destination, underneath the headlines of corruption and economic mismanagement is a vibrant, joyful and motivated mix of people who are attempting to bring the spectacular natural wonders and attributes of this country to their full ecotourism potential. Georgetown, the country’s crumbling colonial capital, is distinctly Caribbean with a vibrant nightlife, plenty of great places to eat and a popular, edgy market; the interior of the country is more Amazonian with its struggling Amerindian communities and unparalleled wildlife-viewing opportunities that all feel safely away from the political problems.
