Greenland is the world's largest non-continental island, in the far NE of North America, largely within the Arctic Circle. Although it is still part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it was granted self-government effective in 1979, more recently it voted for more autonomy, in effect making it a separate country with formal ties to Denmark.
Remote Greenland and its sea that surrounds it, is either permanently frozen or chilled by cold currents. In the country's centre, ice can be anything up to 3km thick. It is therefore no surprise that most of its population hugs around the ice-free coastal region. Indeed, the name 'Greenland' is itself a bit of a misnomer. Those wondering why anyone would want to inhabit such hostile terrain are without knowledge of the beautiful sights that Greenland has to offer. The arctic nights in the winter concoct a mystical continuous twilight and, in the far N of the country, complete darkness, coupled with the incredible Northern Lights. The abundance of snow creates the perfect environment for activities such as tour cruises and dog sledging which interweave in and out of Greenland's dazzling array of fjords, mountains, icebergs and islands. The wildlife is also a major attraction, with abundant opportunities to view creatures such as whales, seals and birds. |
