Statue of Christ the Redeemer

The Statue of Christ the Redeemer standing 30m (98ft) overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro and the Guanabara Bay. It is considered to be the largest art deco statue in the world and is a representation of Jesus Christ standing with outstretched arms. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone and designed/developed by the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. Construction started in mid-1926 and was completed in 1931. The statue is a symbol of Christianity and sits on top of the Corcovado Mountain with popular viewing areas and a small restaurant and souvenir shops also at the top. The statue itself sits on a very small church which does host exclusive services. Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain is a 396m peak situated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the mouth of Guanabara Bay. The name is said to refer to its resemblance to the traditional shape of concentrated refined loaf sugar. The mountain is one of the most famous in the world and is a spectacular backdrop to Brazil’s liveliest city, Rio De Janeiro. Visitors can see excellent views of Rio de Janeiro from the top of the mountain and sunsets are particularly spectacular. Cable cars, which were introduced in 1912, take visitors to the top of the mountain, although more adventurous travellers may choose to make the steep climb on foot.

Maracana Stadium

The Maracanã Stadium is an open-air stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil named after the Maracanã neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro. It was opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup. Since then, it has mainly been used for football matches between the major football clubs in Rio de Janeiro, including Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama. It has also hosted a number of concerts and other sporting events. The stadium currently seats 82,238 spectators and can be viewed as part of organised tours which give a history of the stadium and access to the various areas.
